“Be Bold, Be Bright, Be Beautiful, Be Blissful, Be You…” -MJ
As beautiful as she is on the outside she is even more beautiful on the inside, indeed a beautiful soul. Demure, effortlessly graceful, MJ is very much the true definition of a lady. At first impressions MJ is soft-spoken, but not quiet; vulnerable, but not weak; reserved, but outspoken; she’s confident, but not arrogant. As for her style, lets just say it has a persona of its own.
WHO’S THAT GIRL…
Makia Jenkins aka MJ is a thirty year old Philadelphia native, coming from humble beginnings MJ literally learned at an early age how to make something out of nothing. She is a woman who was raised by a village, a loving mother of two, a devoted girlfriend, a caring friend, a genuinely, beautiful spirit and a self-claimed Fashion Exhibitionist. She lets her fashion do the TALKING for her.
PV: If you had to finish this sentence my style is…
MJ: “My style is…eclectic, very diverse, bold, confident, it takes risks and demands attentions. I’m not afraid to wear anything, so I guess you can call me a Fashion Exhibitionist.”
PV: What are your fashion aspirations?
MJ: “I want to be great. I want to do everything I was born to do. I want to be a major household name through my line and brand, travel the world and everyone knows who I am. I want to be a positive person and inspire little girls and women just like me. I want to do so much.”
PV: Would you mind telling me a little bit about MJ the brand/line?
MJ: “First and foremost I want it to be affordable for my actual audience. For the women…and men that look up to me and say I want to be able to afford that. I don’t want to have to charge $700 for a pair of pants, you know?” (Whew. I was sooo glad to hear that!)
PV: What do you see MJ the brand being defined as?
MJ: “Very bold, high fashion, of course trendy and beautiful statement pieces.”
PV: So will this be a full line? Clothes, shoes, accessories, etc, as well?
MJ: “Yes. I love, love accessories and clothes. So, yes clothes, shoes, accessories, handbags, everything. Right now I’m working on shirts and I’m starting to expand over in to accessories, but soon it will be everything.”
PV: Since you brought up your shirts the Dripping C’s; what was the inspiration behind them? How do you hand paint these shirts?
MJ: “Since I was a little girl I have been very artistic. I grew up struggling I seemed always stressed and needed an outlet, so one day I just started drawing I didn’t even know that I could. I was like WOW this is awesome and my teacher encouraged me to enter in to Artist of the Year contest, so I did it. I was very nervous because there was one other little girl who was better than me, well who I thought was better than me and I went for it and I won. I had my art hung up in the art museum and Children’s Hospital. I won a $1,000 savings bond and I beat her and I was just so excited I couldn’t believe I did it. Then every year after that I won and from then I on I have always been in to art and knew how to paint very well. But after school I didn’t use my talent much after that until one night I had to attend my sister’s party and I had absolutely nothing to wear. I had an idea of what I wanted to wear in my mind, so I went to the store and brought all the supplies and made my first shirt. I got so many compliments that night at dinner and no one believed I hand painted the shirt. Everything just blew up from there and that was literally twelve weeks ago.”
PV: How long does it take you to paint of your Chanel inspired shirts?
MJ: “It used to take me forty-five minutes to make one shirt and now it’s about twenty minutes since I have it down packed.”
PV: Who’s some of style icons?
MJ: “June Ambrose. I love her, I love her style and of course I love Coco Chanel.”
PV: Where do you see yourself and your brand going outside of your line? Will you continue styling?
MJ: “Yes, I’ll always continue styling, whether it’s just myself or my children; styling is a part of my life. I see myself in the future hopefully styling major people and doing some great things.”
Openly admitting to not having a mental rolodex of all the “IT” fashion designers MJ has a natural eye for style and a genuine love for fashion. She loves thrifting. Finally a fashionista who isn’t obsessed with labels and price tags, but with quality. Until next time Fashionistas & Fashionistos…
